About Me

The Story behind "The 3am Mind"

My Story

For years, I stared at the ceiling, wondering why sleep came so easily to everyone else — and so impossibly hard for me.
I'm a veteran, a former first responder, and a trauma survivor. I've lived in the regions of the world that produce PTSD just by being there.— the kind of world where you learn to stay alert because staying alert keeps you alive. The problem is, your nervous system doesn't automatically stand down when the danger passes. Mine didn't. For over a decade, it didn't.

For me, the hardest part wasn’t what actually happened, but the years that followed. I worked as an Aeromedical Evacuation Paramedic with the Air Force, working out of the back of a C-130 in a tactical environment, and I completed two tours in Iraq. I was also a Paramedic in my city for many years. I used to think I could handle anything, but I was wrong. I told myself that poor sleep was normal, that everyone felt this way, and that it would eventually get better. But it didn’t. It just got harder.

The 3 a.m. wake-ups. The nightmares people don't talk about in the daylight. The exhaustion that piles on top of exhaustion. And underneath all of it — the anger. Not just frustration. Real, burning anger at myself for something as basic as not being able to fall asleep. As if I wasn't trying hard enough. I just needed to relax. If you've been there, you know exactly what I mean.

The Actions I Took

I reached a point where I knew I couldn't keep going like this, so I started learning. Not casually — obsessively. I read the research on trauma and sleep. I studied what actually happens to the brain after prolonged stress and how a hypervigilant nervous system processes — or refuses to process — rest.

One of the things that changed everything for me was realizing that PTSD doesn't just cause poor sleep. It fundamentally alters how your brain and body approach sleep in the first place. The standard advice — the chamomile tea, the screen time rules, the sleep hygiene checklists — was never designed for a nervous system running on threat mode. No wonder it didn't work.

I tested everything I could find. Some helped. Some didn't. Over time, I built a set of approaches that actually worked for me — techniques grounded in real sleep science and adapted to the reality of living with trauma. Slowly, the 3 a.m. wake-ups became less frequent. The nightmares began to lose their grip. For the first time in years, I began to truly rest.

Why I Wrote "The 3am Mind"

I wrote The 3AM Mind because the book I needed didn't exist. Not one written from lived experience, in plain language, without clinical distance or false promises. I wrote it for the person lying awake right now, exhausted and angry, quietly wondering if this is just the rest of their life.

It's not the way you have to live anymore. I'm proof of that. I share everything I know — plainly, honestly, and without pretending I have all the answers. I only have the ones that worked for me and have helped others who've been exactly where you are.

I'm not a doctor. I'm not a therapist. I don't have letters after my name, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. What I do have is ten-plus years of living in this darkness, someone who lived with this exhaustion. I've found and tested what actually worked, and finally learned to listen to my own nervous system. I’m sharing this hard-won knowledge plainly and honestly, without any false promises. It helped me find peace, it helped me find rest, and I truly hope it does the same for you.
